Multidays Event: ANGIN x AWS Partnership in Organizing Joint Workshop & Roadshow in Five Major Cities of Indonesia

ANGIN and AWS (Amazon Web Services) held a partnership to organize the first-ever joint workshop roadshow around five major cities of Indonesia; Bandung, Surabaya, Jogja, Bali, and Jakarta titled “From Idea to Startup – “What you need to know to scale your business”. Each of the workshop was divided into four sessions with each one exploring topics such as ecosystem players, startup founders, product development, and fundraising.

What The Partnership Entails: How AWS and ANGIN Complement Each Other
ANGIN as the first and largest network of investors in Indonesia, provides support in early stage investment in the form of investment, connection, and mentoring. Whereas AWS through its world-class cloud technology service provides technical knowledge and service to help startup scale their business by improving operational efficiency. Through the collaboration between ANGIN and AWS, we are aiming to enrich and empower players in the early stage startup ecosystem with best-in-class practices that would propel early stage startups to newer heights. This roadshow integrates local ecosystem players, startup founders, and startups to engage in one event for the early-stage startups to learn about the know-hows in starting their own enterprise.

Gema was supported by Atika (Impact Investment Lead), Irien (Operations Officer), and Sarah (Communication Manager) to execute the roadshow in the time-span of 6 months. Gema also worked beside Meher Vaswani (Business Development) of AWS as our client.

Event Structure & Learning Design

The program will equip Indonesian early stage with a sound knowledge base so they can continue to grow their businesses strategically. This workshop was divided into four main sessions. Each one will explore topics ranging from identifying key stakeholders, product development to fundraising.

Particularly, in this workshop, participants learned how to:
– Understand the role of key ecosystem players and learn how to leverage their expertise
– Build first product and MVP using cloud technology
– Evaluate a technical stack best-practice
– How to raise investment and strategically meet their fundraising needs
– Build appropriate team culture and manage team members
– Participate in a One-on-One session with AWS solution architect or ANGIN’s investment team.

Key-Takeaways from Bandung: A City of Tech and Science Innovators

We were arrived in Bandung on Friday, 5th of April 2019. Our workshop was held at Block71 Bandung (Innovation Factory). With over 50 participants attended, we invited various key ecosystem players in Bandung, which are Ken Ratri (Founder of Geekhunter), Shieny Aprilia (CMO of Agate Studio), Dina Dellyana (Director of Greater Hub ITB), Ronaldias Hartantyo (CMO of Mycotech), Sutansyah Marahakim (Kolaborasi), Hasbi Asyadiq (CEO of Assemblr), Seterhen Akbar (CEO of Labtek Indie), Hadi Santoso (Managing Director of DiLO Coworking Space), and Dibya Pradana (Executive Director of Bandung, Jogja, and Makassar Digital Valley).

Bandung is a city with a lot of universities, this is why audience participating are mostly students whom aspire to be entrepreneurs, and mostly is still in ideation stage with their startup. Bandung is undeniably a city of talents with fresh ideas towards innovation and has a will to not only build business but also to create. From our observation, developed startups from Bandung has authentic ideas because of the nature of their creative city, where there were many young tech and science with good idealism.

Key-Takeaways from Surabaya: The City of Heroes

We hosted the workshop in SUBCo Surabaya on Friday 12th April, 2019. Attracting over 66 startups from Surabaya and also other cities such as Malang and Surakarta. For the Surabaya workshop, we invited Adryan Hafidz (CEO of Kolaborasi), Audrey Maximillan Herli (CEO of Riliv), Fadli Wiliwarhanto (Program Manager of Kumpul), and Aditya Hadi Pratama (Analyst of East Venture) to participate as guest speakers. Startups were very diverse in terms fo the sector and business model that theyre serving, ranging from IoT solution in agritech to health tech solving mental health problems.

Startups were very eager to be connected with ecosystem players outside Surabaya as they were not exposed to investors and ecosystem players outside the city. During our first session (Get to Know Local Ecosystem Players) startups showed enthuthiasm through their participation in the breakout session where they had to do a role playing simulation to create their version of startup enabling organisations (i.e. accelerator, co-working space, and investors). From this session we learned that despite having limited exposure to invited players, startups were quick to learn about each type of startup enabling organizations.

Surabaya event taught us that a big city like Surabaya is still lagging behind in terms of exposure from leading ecosystem players. By bridging the connection between startups outside Jakarta and supporting startup organisations, we hope that this workshop will serve as a gateway to foster strategic connection between players across major cities.

Our Key-Takeaways in Jogja Roadshow: Promising Pool of Tech Talents

We held the Jogja round of the workshop on May 3rd 2019 in BLOCK71. There were a total of 85 attendants who were eager to enrich their knowledge from hearing sessions delivered by Guritno Adi Saputra (CTO of PrivyID), Petra Barus (Co-founder of 99.co), Syauqy Nurul Aziz (VP Product of Jala), Geri Gebyar (Manager of JDV) and Luthfan Herdyanto (Regional Development Lead of  CoHive).

Based on our observation, we can see that Jogja has an admirable number of tech talents. They are generally well-equipped with technical skills in product development and are now looking to obtain the right know hows in selling the product. Startups in Jogja has flourished under a number of incubator programs helmed by the leading university in the city (UGM). Startups become particularly active during the “Founders Inspirational Talk” session as they are already aware of the invited guests (labelling the guests as their “idols”) which shows that the startups are already educated in identifying the local players. However, we still saw a gap in exploring and identifying the right support that they can derived from these players. Through the workshhop, we are hoping that we can bridge the connection between local startups and players outside Jogjakarta, allowing startups to extract more value from the connection.

Our Key-Takeaways in Bali Roadshow: Social Enterprises in The Island of Gods

In Bali, this workshop was held on Friday, June 28th, 2019 in Kembali Innovation Hub. More than 70 people attended the event. We invited 5 key speakers to attend this event, they are Stefanus Suharjono (Investment Manager of GK Plug & Play Indonesia), Dea Surjadi (Head of Indonesia from Golden Gate Ventures), Faye Alund (CEO and Co-founder of Kumpul), Niki Soeraya (COO and Co-founder of GOERS) and Yogi Aditya (CIO of Jojonomic).

Reviewing the enthusiasm, it looks like startups ecosystem in Bali is in a fast-growing pace, we can see that even students can be enthusiastically attend events related to startup ecosystem and start making their own enterprise in such young age. The conversation in the room mostly rotating in the discussion of local-global tension and how to utilize local industries to build startups. Startups in Bali grew around their sensitivity in spotting social and cultural problems in the island, and this is why many of them are building social entreprises. From our point of view, what needs to be improved is the quality of business education around Bali’s entrepreneurial ecosystem as it is very important in making social enterprises sustainable.

Jakarta Roadshow: A Collaboration with CoHive and Plug & Play

Different than other cities, in Jakarta we work alongside startup enabling organisations to multiply our impact. Other than AWS, we also worked with Plug & Play and CoHive. This event took place in CoHive 101, Jakarta Selatan and was focused to organise the opportunity for startups to network with venture capital. This event managed to attract 100 startups and 50 VCs. ANGIN designed a material for people new to fundraising and share their on-ground insight. The event held a panel discussion inviting Venturra, Astra and representatives from ANGIN and Plug and Play to discuss the right know-hows in choosing the right investors for your venture. Investors were particularly keen to learn more about emerging talents that were curated by the organisers exclusively for the one-on-one meeting session.
