Greentsika – Sophisticated Waste Collection, at Your Door

Every city longs for a sustainable and efficient waste management system. In Tulear, Madagascar, waste pre-collection was mostly practiced by the informal sector since Municipalities and State have difficulty in setting up an efficient waste management system. Now, thanks to Greentsika, there’s a more advanced alternative for everyone to handle their waste easily yet wisely.

Originally, Greentsika is an initiative of the NGO Welthungerhilfe established in Tulear in 2014. The idea was to organize waste pre-collection sustainably, starting with door-to-door collection. As it developed, Greentsika was born as the first social waste collection company in Tulear in December 2017. Now, they already have their marketplace and expanded beyond Madagascar.

Empowering People and Home Waste Collection through Technology

In the earlier mentioned informal practice of waste pre-collection, people in Tulear as well as other cities in Madagascar work in deplorable conditions without protection, hygiene and no guarantees to their employment. Clients have no guarantee that the informal service will actually be provided or that it could be professionalized.

This condition ignited the basic idea of Greentsika, that started from a basic service of pre-collection and over time evolved to provide better services through technological improvements. Their computerized home waste collection solution can be applied in most cities in Madagascar and Africa, and even in Asia or South America.

Greentsika’s solution is scalable to wherever communities have difficulty in managing their waste in an organized manner, and allows households to better manage their waste and ensure that it is evacuated to the right places. Eventually, Greentsika plans to implement selective sorting at source to support the system and improve its efficiency.

Greentsika’s Journey and Team

Greentsika’s journey started in 2017, where they launched a pilot phase with 40 households in 1 neighborhood. Three years later in 2020, 2300 households registered for their service, deployed more than 10 payment points, and did their feasibility and market study for the deployment service in the city of Fort Dauphin.

In the next 3 years, Greentsika plans to grow into 10 more cities in Madagascar and 9 more in Africa, while also initiating waste sorting by subscribing customers, start off construction at their first waste processing and recycling center, and model duplication from pre-collection system to waste processing.

The team behind Greentsika consists of Gaetan Rajaofera as Co-founder & Communications Officer, Marcellio Tombozara, Waste Valorization Specialist & Co-founder as CEO, Kevin Rabefaritra IT Consultant & Co-founder as CTO, and Tianasoa Azafitsialonina, Economical Sciences expertise & Co-Founder as CFO.
